A man has been found dead, riddled with stab wounds, inside a notorious unit block in Sydney’s inner west before his “best mate” was taken into custody by police but later released.

Police were called to the unit block on Lakemba Street in Belmore at 9pm on Saturday, where they found a man, aged in his 30s, dead.

The man’s body had multiple stab wounds, though he is yet to be formally identified.

Also at the scene was a 24-year-old man described by locals as the victim’s “best mate”.

Police took him to Concord Hospital for assessment and then to Campsie police station for questioning.

He was released shortly after without charge.

The brick unit block, sandwiched between two industrial businesses, has been called “the worst property” in Belmore as it is often used as a dumping ground.

Locals frequently complain to the council about the amount of rubbish and old furniture dumped in the unit block’s front yard, nature strip and over the footpath.

Police are working to uncover how the older man wound up dead inside the property.

Detectives from both Campsie and the homicide squad have formed Strike Force Sandilands.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
