Mayra Ramirez loses her boot in a tussle with Captain Steph Catley.
Carpenter wins the ball back from Colombia and the Matildas slow their pace a little. Carpenter and Raso tee-up on the right side of the pitch, winning a throw in high up for Australia. Clare Hunt heads the ball but there’s no one behind her except Colombian keeper Natalia Giraldo.
The game pauses momentarily as Quejada Yirleidys is down with an injury.

Cooney-Cross shoots from new position
Another Colombian mistake by Daniela Caracas passing from the back opens the field up for Kyra Cooney-Cross who shoots but it’s stopped by Giraldo. She tries again with the rebound, but it goes wide.
Carpenter is fouled by Ramirez and Gorry has a measly shot from distance but Colombia clears it.

Van Egmond gets a talking-to from the ref as the Matildas are down early on for the third time in this tournament.
Australia hold on to possession but Michelle Heyman does nothing with a pass over Colombia’s backline from Van Egmond.
Michelle Heyman again takes advantage of Colombia’s mistake when captain Catalina Usme tries to backheel the ball to no one, but Heyman is indecisive and practically passes the ball to the Colombian keeper.

Fairer fight already in San Diego
The Matildas get the ball to the other side of the pitch quickly now and Tameka Yallop shoots wide of the Colombian goal. Already, it’s evidently a much fairer match for the Matildas despite early Colombian threats.
Carpenter is all but glued to Caicedo on the left wing and the Colombians are trying to attack from the right instead. A beautiful touch from Yirleidys isn’t enough to convert anything yet.
Cooney-Cross has the ball further up for the Matildas but Colombia gets numbers back quickly and stop Australia from leaking through their reinforced backline.

Hayley Raso has gotten away with a foul on her former Real Madrid teammate Linda Caicedo, and it goes out for a Colombian corner instead.
It’s taken short and Sara Martinez has a go at goal, but it lands comfortably in Micah’s hands.

Cooney-Cross is playing a lot higher than her normal deep midfield and is instead alongside striker Michelle Heyman. Cooney-Cross has only scored one international goal for the Matildas.
Wendy Bonilla crosses from the right but no one’s there to get to the end of it and Carpenter cleans it up for the Matildas.
Caicedo and Ramirez pair up again to cross to World Cup goal scorer Leicy Santos who shoots. It’s just saved by Tegan Micah.
