New Orleans attack updates LIVE: Multiple fatalities after truck ploughs into New Orleans NYE crowd
The College Football Playoff quarter-final between Georgia and Notre Dame at the Sugar Bowl was postponed for one day as a result of the attack.
The game, originally scheduled for 7.45pm on Wednesday (US Central Time) at the 70,000-seat Superdome, was pushed back to 3pm on Thursday. The winner advances to the Orange Bowl against Penn State on January 9.
“Public safety is paramount,” Sugar Bowl chief executive Jeff Hundley said at a media briefing alongside federal, state and local officials, including Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
“All parties all agree that it’s in the best interest of everybody and public safety that we postpone the game.”
US congressman Troy Carter, a Louisiana Democrat, said the decision to postpone the game “was not done lightly”.
