A large-scale search for a teenage boy missing off a popular beach on the Central Coast has resumed.

A group of teenagers were reportedly taken into the sea from a rock shelf at North Avoca Beach about 3.10pm on Tuesday and one of them, a 15-year-old boy, went missing.

Early reports were that he was with friends who raised the alarm that he was missing, a Surf Life Saving NSW spokeswoman said.

“We don’t know how many or any other details. We have multiple jetskis, UAVs and rescue swimmers tasked to assist this morning,” she said.

NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, local surf lifesavers and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service were involved in the search, which was called off after 7pm.

At 6am on Wednesday, local surf lifesavers, marine rescue and water police, as well as the Surf Life Saving NSW drone team, resumed the search. The Westpac rescue helicopter will be there at 9am.

A hazardous surf warning is in place on Wednesday for parts of the NSW coast, including the Central Coast region where the boy went missing.

Volunteers from Terrigal Marine Rescue helped the water police with Tuesday’s search effort and described conditions offshore as choppy with a 2.5-metre to three-metre swell.

Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steve Pearce urged beachgoers to take care over the festive period.
